Pretty pencils

Since I'm a person that still keeps a date book (gasp!), and writes everything in it in pencil, these colorful writing tools from Amanda Catherine on Etsy caught my eye. They're so charming and fun! If you don't think you would use them yourself, they make for a great party favor, too. Or you could give them to that fabulous friend in your life who really does wear sequins to breakfast. :)

Bowie brownies

There's a question that I'm always asked when people hear my last name is Bowie: "Are you related to David?" I feel lucky to share a name with a rock legendespecially since my heritage is more easily traced back to a different Bowie: Jim, who fought at the Alamo with the Bowie knife. But my unconfirmed relation to David is a cool one, and one that's been a constant conversation for my entire life.

Based on this, I laughed out loud when I saw the recipe for Bowie Brownies, developed by Natalie Glock at Blame it on the Brioche, and shared by Easy Living magazine in the UK. What a cool, music-inspired dish! This is one dessert recipe I think I have to try (even though my other attempts at baking have gone awry).

Are you a Bowie fan? :)

Birthday wishes

As many of you know, I'm always on the hunt for creative ways to send handwritten greetings to family and friends. This clever birthday card from W+K Studio kicks things up a notch—I love that you can color in the number of candles yourself. So fun!

Do you still send birthday cards in the mail to friends?

Signature karaoke songs

Last weekend, some friends of mine (one, a former Wheatone) came to town for a tour of my new apartment, and dinner out in BK. We dined at a cozy neighborhood spot, and en route back to my place, happened to walk past a bar that was bumping with karaoke tunes. We couldn't resist! After putting our name in for several signature songs (Respect, Love Shack, and more), it got me thinking: What makes for a successful karaoke song?

The most crowd-pleasing numbers included the throwbacks—Kelly Clarkson, Queen, even Mr. Big. And our rendition of Madonna's Like a Prayer was a hit, and brought back the harmonies we learned during a cappella practice years ago. :)

Are you a karaoke fan? If so, do you have a signature song you always sing?

Arrested Development returns

Are you planning to tune in for the Netflix premiere of Arrested Development on Sunday? I can't wait for the return of the Bluth family and season four of the quirky show. I'm an Arrested Development newbie—I watched a marathon of the show a little over a year ago and was hooked. Perfect timing for the series to come back!

Do you have a favorite moment from seasons 1 through 3? I love any of the scenes with Will Arnett and his character Gob—especially the episodes with Amy Poehler as his wife. Hilarious!

PS—Posters celebrating the return of season 4.

Apartment Tour: Keri Russell

Maybe it's because I recently spotted Keri Russell's adorable family two tables over from me at a restaurant in Brooklyn Heights, but I was thrilled to get a glimpse into her gorgeous Brooklyn home, courtesy of Elle Decor. The actress—and her carpenter hubby Shane—did all the work themselves. I love the rustic, minimalist look, not to mention all the natural light!

Keri's been everywhere lately. Besides her show The Americans, she has a new film coming out this summer called Austenland, that I can't wait to see.

Beaching it

Clearly, sunshine is on my mind (despite the clouds and rain in New York this week). I talked about the best beaches in New York last week—now, I can't help but point out this super cute sleeveless tunic from Madewell. Wouldn't it be the perfect bathing suit cover up out in the sand? I love the bright, rosy color. Plus, it looks so comfy and chic.

What do you wear over your swimsuit at the beach or pool?

More beach time here, here, here, and here.

The weekend is here!

Happy Friday, my darling readers! What do you have planned for the next couple of days off? I'm excited that—somehow—Matt scored tickets to the Great Googa Mooga, a giant amusement park of sorts in Prospect Park. We went last year, and it was a bit of a bust, but supposedly they've revamped it. We'll see how it goes! Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead. Here, to get it started right, a few happy posts from around the web:

A baby announcement.

Puppy paper!

Signature stationery.

John Krasinski love.

Brooklyn mugs.

Photo art.

Music worth listening to.

Fun Derby shoes.

Clever moving announcements.

How to be a gentlemen. :)

'Handwritten' thank you notes

As anyone who reads my blog knows, I love sending handwritten notes. But when Swiss-Miss shared this video about Felt, a cool new iPad app, I had to check it out. What a clever solution for digitizing thank you notes, birthday cards, and more. I love the efficiency, but also the fact that these 'handwritten' cards still carry that personal touch.

Would you download this app? Or do you still prefer pen-to-paper instead of pen-to-screen? :)

Best beaches in New York

What is your favorite beach spot in New York? With summer fast approaching—and the hot, hot weather, too—I want to map out a few sandy destinations well in advance. I've been to Montauk, the North Fork and all the way to Long Branch in New Jersey (they're all gorgeous!), but I'm looking for something that's a bit more close by. An easy day trip, if you know what I mean.

Right now, Water Taxi Beach out on Governor's Island looks like the closest spot, especially with the free ferry to get there from Brooklyn. Have you been? Would love to hear your recommendations for places to soak up the sand and sun in New York!

PS—A pop up pool!

Emma Stone, Meet Woody Allen

As a huge Woody Allen, Emma Stone, and Colin Firth fan, you can only imagine my delight when I read the news that this trio would be uniting to film Allen's next project—in the South of France. The same cinematographer that shot Midnight in Paris is confirmed as well. Oh la la! Fingers crossed that this film will be as delightful as the last time Allen visited France on-screen.

Are you a Woody Allen fan? What's your favorite film of his?

How to hail a cab

This article from Travel & Leisure about how to hail a cab in New York made me smile. Did you know that you're supposed to flap your arms like a bird if you want to signal a cabbie that you need a lift to the airport? Hilarious. There are more tipsand fun illustrations by Michael Hoewelerhere if you really want to learn how to snag a taxi like a pro.

I'm curious—do you take a lot of cabs? Since moving to Brooklyn, the subway has been my chariot of choice. :)

Planning a road trip

Now that Memorial Day Weekend is approaching fast, Matt and I have been vacation plotting. We're toying with the idea of a road trip to Savannah, Georgia or to the Outer Banks in North Carolina this summer. Yes, it would be much quicker to fly, but a road trip seems fun. Neither of us have spent much time in the south so we'd like to visit and enjoy seeing more of the east coast along the way.

If you were planning for a four-day weekend getaway, where would you go? Would love to hear your travel picks!
