Whenever I pass a flower shop or bodega in New York with tons of buckets of fresh and colorful stems, I feel a sudden rush to make an impulse buy. But I always stop at the number of options. I never know what to pair with what! Of course, I know which types of flowers I like, but I'd love to be able to skillfully construct a well-balanced arrangement for my bedside table, my bathroom, or anywhere else in my home.
So, I've been researching floral design classes in NYC, and I'm delighted to report that there are quite a few options to choose from. I was about to click "purchase" on a Williamsburg DIY class, when I found out that my favorite neighborhood floral shop offers classes, too! I can't wait to sign up.

Tulips are always my favorite part of the change in seasons from winter to spring. This week, I popped by my local florist in Brooklyn to pick up an arrangement for my new vase. Usually, she works her magic and puts together a beautiful assortment of whatever blooms are in season at the time. But when I asked for tulips, she explained: They're brilliant on their own! She's right, don't you think?

How often do you buy fresh flower arrangements to sprinkle around your home? It's a new tradition I've started since moving to Brooklyn—and a cheap investment that brightens up our entire space. I'm lucky—Edelweiss Floral Atelier is a new shop in Cobble Hill, and one that happens to be located along the route I walk home. The selection—and the owner's expertise—makes stopping in to put together a bouquet so much fun.
Another option? Buy flowers at the supermarket. These tips for how to arrange a bouquet like a professional from Joanna over at A Cup of Jo are great and really easy to do.

There's nothing I love more than a weekend in New York with nothing to do, and nowhere to be. My plans-free Saturday led me to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens to check out the gorgeous (and fragrant) cherry blossom trees. Have you been? Such beauty! We had the best day relaxing in the sun and 75 degree temps.
Apparently, the next two weeks are peak season for cherry blossom trees, and before long all the petals will start to fall like snow. The display culminates with the Sakura Matsuri Festival at the end of April. Trust me, it's worth the trip!

Since spring is just around the corner, I have to ask: what is your favorite flower? I love tulips — red ones, yellow ones, purple ones, pink ones. They are so fragrant and pretty, don’t you think? :) And how gorgeous do they look wrapped up in brown paper? I love this idea from Tokketok to wrap a bouquet of fresh blooms with a message, or a painted-on design. Quite a clever way to personalize the next bouquet of flowers you give!

I know it's only the first day of March, but these floral paintings by artist Lulie Wallace definitely put a little spring in my step! :) I love the vibrant pops of color in every piece. Lulie's work is also a great reminder of a New York tradition I've always wanted to start: picking up fresh flowers every week for my apartment. Wouldn't that be nice? For the weeks I forget/don't have time, one of Lulie's paintings would be the perfect substitution — gorgeous flowers that bloom all year long!
